Neeraj Chauhan ends India’s 16-year wait for men’s recurve individual medal

Aichi-Nagoya, Oct 3 (UNI) Teenager Neeraj Chauhan ended India’s 16-year wait for a men’s individual recurve medal at the Asian Games, holding his nerve in a thrilling all-Indian bronze-medal clash to beat top seed Dhiraj Bommadevara 6-4 here on Saturday.
The 18-year-old Neeraj, who had been staring at defeat after falling 2-4 behind, produced a perfect 30 in the fourth set before edging Dhiraj 29-28 in the decider to clinch the bronze.
The victory brought India its first men’s individual recurve medal at the Asian Games since Tarundeep Rai won silver at Guangzhou in 2010.
The bronze medal was particularly significant for Neeraj after he had missed out on a place in the final, losing 1-7 to Japan’s Junya Nakanishi in the semifinal. He bounced back immediately, however, to deny compatriot Dhiraj a podium finish.
Dhiraj, the top seed, made a poor start in the bronze-medal contest, shooting a seven with his first arrow as Neeraj took the opening set 29-26. The Indian No. 1 recovered strongly to win the second set 28-27 and then edged ahead 4-2 by taking the third 29-28.
With his medal hopes under pressure, Neeraj produced his best response of the contest. He shot a flawless 30 in the fourth set while Dhiraj managed 28, taking the match into the deciding fifth set.
Neeraj once again kept his composure, shooting 29 against Dhiraj’s 28 to complete a 6-4 victory and secure a piece of Asian Games history.
Earlier, Neeraj had stormed into the semifinals with a 7-1 quarterfinal victory over Bhutan’s Lam Dorji, assuring India of a medal in the event.
The bronze added to a strong showing by Indian archers at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, with the country finishing its archery campaign with nine medals, including five gold, two silver and two bronze.
