Lovlina storms into semis, assures India another Asian Games boxing medal

Aichi-Nagoya, Sept 28 (UNI) Lovlina Borgohain produced a commanding display to storm into the women’s 75kg semifinals and assure India another boxing medal at the Asian Games here on Monday.
The Olympic bronze medallist defeated South Korea’s Seong Suyeon 5-0 in a unanimous quarterfinal verdict, securing her second successive Asian Games medal after her silver at Hangzhou 2023.
Lovlina took control from the opening round, using her reach effectively and landing sharp jabs and counters to keep the South Korean at bay.
Seong tried to increase the pressure in the second round, but Lovlina remained composed, evaded her attacks and responded with crisp combinations to consolidate her advantage.
The Indian turned up the pressure in the final round, finding her range with quick one-two combinations and forcing Seong onto the back foot. All five judges scored the bout 30-27 in Lovlina’s favour.
The victory guarantees Lovlina at least a bronze and keeps alive her bid for a first Asian Games gold.
It also strengthened India’s boxing campaign at Aichi-Nagoya, with Lovlina becoming the fourth Indian boxer to assure a medal after Parveen Hooda, Ankush Panghal and Narender Berwal.
Lovlina will now return for the semifinals, where she will look to go one step further than her silver-medal finish at Hangzhou and book a place in the gold-medal bout.
