Satwik-Chirag suffer shock exit; India's badminton campaign hit by upset

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 25 (UNI) India's badminton campaign at the Asian Games suffered a major setback as defending champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty crashed out in the opening round, losing to Thailand's Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeratsakul 21-12, 19-21, 14-21.
The Indian pair, seeded among the leading contenders, dominated the opening game but struggled to maintain their momentum as the Thai combination fought back to level the contest and then sealed the deciding game.
It was the Thai pair's first victory over Satwik and Chirag in three meetings, with all three encounters having gone to the deciding game.
In boxing, Sachin Siwach advanced to the men's 60kg quarterfinals after defeating Jordan's Mohammad Abu Jajeh 4-1. He will next face Japan's Shunsuke Kitamoto.
Table tennis saw mixed fortunes for India. Manush Shah advanced after defeating Iran's Benyamin Faraji 4-2, while Yashaswini Ghorpade defeated Syria's Hend Zaza 4-1.
Sreeja Akula went down 1-4 to DPR Korea's Pyon Song Gyong, while Manav Thakkar lost 2-4 to DPR Korea's U Tae Ryong.
In the men's team event, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai combined to beat Indonesia 3-2. However, Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah lost 1-3 to Japan.
Sreeja Akula and Syndrela Das also suffered a 0-3 defeat against China's Kuai Man and Wang Manyu.
India added a bronze medal in canoe sprint, with Prasanna Kumar Chempadiyil Sathyaprakash and Prohit Baroi finishing third in the men's kayak double 500m final in 1:40.411.
Megha Pradeep and L Neha Devi finished fourth in the women's canoe double 500m semifinal in 2:08.306 and missed out on the Final A.
Several events remained underway or were scheduled later in the day, including the women's boxing bout involving Preeti, further badminton matches and the evening athletics programme.
Results of the Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand, Simran Singhi-Kavipriya Selvam and Hariharan Amsakarunan-M R Arjun badminton matches were not yet available at the time of filing.
