Asian Games gold for Parveen, three years after Hangzhou setback

Nagoya, Oct 2 (UNI) Parveen Hooda completed a remarkable Asian Games comeback on Friday, overcoming a fiercely contested final to win the women's 65kg boxing gold medal, three years after being stripped of her bronze at the previous edition following a doping violation.
Parveen edged past Chinese Taipei's Chen Nien-chin 3-2 in a split decision in a nerve-wracking final, holding her nerve in a contest in which none of the five judges awarded a 30-point score to either boxer.
The Indian made a confident start, taking the opening round unanimously as both boxers initially fought cautiously before stepping up the exchanges.
Chen responded strongly in the second round, landing several clean punches and pressing Parveen with greater aggression to take the round unanimously and level the contest.
With the gold at stake, neither boxer was willing to give ground in the final round. Parveen found her range with sharp jabs, while Chen responded with attacks of her own.
Parveen produced a crucial burst midway through the round, catching Chen with clean punches before both boxers exchanged in the closing seconds. As the final bell rang, both raised their hands, aware that the outcome could go either way.
The judges eventually gave Parveen the verdict 3-2, sparking celebrations in the Indian corner.
The victory capped a strong campaign in which Parveen had earlier defeated Uzbekistan's Navbakhor Khamidova and then swept past China's Li Shu 5-0 in the semifinal.
Against Li, Parveen used counter-punching and controlled distance to dominate after narrowly taking the opening round.
The gold was particularly significant for Parveen, who had endured a difficult setback after winning bronze at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. She was subsequently stripped of that medal after testing positive in a dope test and was handed a suspension.
Her return has been a story of rebuilding. After completing her suspension, Parveen returned to competition and won the World Boxing Cup Finals in 2025, before suffering another setback in the Commonwealth Games quarterfinals earlier this year.
She then became only the third Indian woman boxer to reach an Asian Games final, after Mary Kom and Lovlina Borgohain.
Chen, an experienced campaigner and a 2026 Asian Championships gold medallist, had also come through a tight semifinal, beating North Korea's Hwang Hyo-sun 3-2.
From a medal stripped away in Hangzhou to a gold medal earned in Nagoya, Parveen's Asian Games journey came full circle in the boxing ring on Friday.
