WPL 2027 to begin on January 14, auction set for October 28

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) The fifth edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL) will be held from January 14 to February 7, 2027, the BCCI announced on Wednesday.
The five franchises have until September 28 to finalise their player retentions, with the auction scheduled for October 28 in Kochi.
The upcoming auction will be a mini-auction, following last year's mega-auction in Delhi, where 73 slots were filled. Each franchise can have a maximum of 18 players and will operate with a salary purse of Rs 15 crore. There is no restriction on the number of players a team can retain.
Deepti Sharma was the biggest buy at last year's mega-auction, with UP Warriorz securing the India allrounder for Rs 3.2 crore. Mumbai Indians signed Melie Kerr for Rs 3 crore, while Shikha Pandey fetched Rs 2.4 crore from UP Warriorz.
Kashvee Gautam remains the most expensive player bought at a WPL mini-auction. Gujarat Giants paid Rs 2 crore for the fast bowler at the 2024 auction, while Simran Shaikh was the second-highest buy at a mini-auction after UP Warriorz acquired her for Rs 1.9 crore in 2025.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter the new season as defending champions after winning the title in 2026. They had also lifted the trophy in 2024.
Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, could head into the fifth season with a new head coach. Lisa Keightley has taken up the role of Cricket Australia’s national development lead, leaving her future with the two-time WPL champions uncertain.
UP Warriorz have also made a change to their support staff, appointing former India women's selection committee chairperson Neetu David as their chief scout. She replaces Bengal allrounder Rajib Dutta in the role.UNI TB AAB
