Jaiswal joins elite club on Test debut in England

Leeds, June 20 (UNI) Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name into the history books on Friday by becoming the first Indian batsman to score a century on debut Test appearances in both England and Australia.
His unbeaten 100 at Headingley on Day 1 of the first Test against England saw him join an elite group of only five players worldwide to achieve this rare double.
The milestone came in the 49th over of India’s first innings, when Jaiswal calmly nudged a Brydon Carse delivery towards point for a single and burst into celebration, taking off his helmet and letting out a roar that reflected the magnitude of his achievement.
The 22-year-old left-hander had reached 99 with back-to-back boundaries off Carse — a fierce cut through backward point and a stylish cover drive that raced past Ben Stokes.
Jaiswal’s hundred follows his commanding 171 in his maiden Test in Australia during the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, confirming his reputation as a big-match player and series opener specialist.
With his unbeaten century at Headingley, Jaiswal became only the fifth Indian batsman to score a hundred in his maiden Test innings on English soil. The young opener reached the milestone in style, joining an elite group of Indian cricketers who made an immediate impact in their debut Test innings in England.
The exclusive list features Murali Vijay (146 at Trent Bridge, 2014), Vijay Manjrekar (133 at Headingley, 1952), Sourav Ganguly (131 at Lord’s, 1996), and Sandeep Patil (129 not out at Old Trafford, 1982). Jaiswal's composed 100 not out at Headingley now stands proudly alongside these landmark performances in Indian cricket history.
The knock was a mix of patience and flair, underpinned by Jaiswal’s ability to punish anything short or wide. Even as he appeared to struggle with cramps late in the session, the youngster showed no signs of relenting, accelerating confidently as he neared his century.
India were in a strong position at 215/2 at Tea, with Jaiswal anchoring the innings and eyeing a bigger score.
