Arshdeep sets Indian record with 38 T20I wickets in 2026

Christchurch, Oct 24 (UNI) Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has set a new benchmark for Indian bowlers in T20 Internationals, claiming 38 wickets in 2026 to become the country's highest wicket-taker in the format in a calendar year.
Arshdeep surpassed the previous Indian record of 37 wickets held by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who achieved the feat in 2022. The milestone underlines Arshdeep's growing importance to India's T20 bowling attack and his consistency in the shortest format.
Arshdeep's latest tally also places him among the leading wicket-takers in a calendar year in T20Is among full-member nations. Ireland's Josh Little holds the benchmark with 39 wickets in 2022, while Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga claimed 38 wickets in 2024.
The Indian left-arm pacer has now featured prominently in the country's annual bowling records on three occasions, having taken 36 wickets in 2024 and 33 in 2022. Spinner Varun Chakaravarthy also claimed 36 wickets in 2025, while Axar Patel has taken 32 wickets in 2026.
The latest statistical milestones emerged from India's second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch, which also saw the hosts produce a notable middle-order batting performance.
Glenn Phillips scored 70 and Bevon Jacobs made 58, becoming the latest New Zealand pair batting at No. 4 or lower to register half-centuries in the same T20I innings. Previous instances included Colin de Grandhomme and Tom Bruce against Sri Lanka in 2019, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips against Pakistan in 2024, and Mitchell and Michael Bracewell against Sri Lanka later that year.
The feat is also rare in T20Is against India. South Africa's Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller scored half-centuries in Delhi in 2022, while Aiden Markram and Miller achieved the feat in Perth the same year. Australia's Tim David and Marcus Stoinis also recorded the double against India in Hobart in 2025.
India's innings featured a late acceleration, with the team scoring 66 for three in the first 10 overs before adding 114 for three in the remaining 10, reflecting a significant increase in scoring during the second half.
The match also brought the spotlight on India's explosive opening approach, with Abhishek Sharma reaching 100 sixes in the first six overs of T20Is, according to the supplied statistical figures. He moved ahead of Rohit Sharma, who finished with 98, while New Zealand's Martin Guptill is third with 97.
Arshdeep's calendar-year record, however, remains the standout individual milestone, reinforcing his position as one of India's most productive T20I bowlers.
