Gurindervir Singh’s 100m bronze offers fresh hope for Indian sprinting: Coach Happy

Chandigarh, Oct 3 (UNI) Indian sprinter Gurindervir Singh’s bronze medal in the men’s 100 metres at the Asian Games could prove a breakthrough moment for Indian sprinting, showing younger athletes that a podium finish in one of athletics’ most competitive events is achievable, his coach Happy said.
The medal has generated excitement among athletes and coaches in Jalandhar, where Gurindervir spent more than a decade developing as a sprinter.
Happy said Gurindervir had trained in Jalandhar for around 12 to 13 years and that his rise had been built on years of setbacks, discipline and sustained work rather than overnight success.
“A medal in the 100 metres gives a different kind of confidence,” Happy said. “Young athletes can now believe that if an Indian can reach the podium, they too can compete at that level.”
The coach said Gurindervir had faced defeats during his career but had consistently used them to identify weaknesses and improve his performance.
That persistence eventually helped him establish national records and emerge among India’s leading sprinters.
Happy said the medal could have an impact beyond Gurindervir’s individual career by encouraging more children to take up track and field, particularly sprint events.
He urged parents and youngsters to look at the years of preparation behind international medals rather than only the final result.
“There is no shortcut to a medal,” he said. “You need hard work, discipline and patience. An athlete has to keep working even after defeats.”
Happy said Gurindervir’s bronze should be viewed as another stage in his career rather than the final destination.
The focus would now be on further improvement, better timing and challenging for the top position at future competitions, he added.
“We hope that in the coming years he will win gold and create new records,” Happy said.
He also appealed to youngsters to spend more time on sports grounds, saying competitive sport could offer both discipline and opportunity to the next generation.
