French Open: Sindhu storms into semifinals, Chaliha bows out

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu advanced to the semifinals of the French Open Super 750 after beating Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Pin-Chian 21-13, 21-14 in straight games on Thursday.
The 31-year-old Indian was in control throughout the quarterfinal, using her attacking game and solid defence to keep Chiu under pressure. Sindhu is now two wins away from claiming her maiden French Open title and is also chasing her second BWF World Tour title of the season, having won the Japan Open earlier this year.
Sindhu is now the only Indian left in the tournament. She will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani and Japan’s Hina Aakechi in the semifinals.
A place in the final could set up a possible clash against world No. 1 An Se Young, who faces Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the other half of the draw.
Chaliha exits after fighting display
Ashmita Chaliha’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals, but not before the Indian made a strong impression in Paris. Chaliha had produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by defeating world No. 2 and three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi 21-19, 21-18 in the previous round.
Against former world champion Okuhara, Chaliha fought back after losing the opening game but eventually went down 10-21, 21-17, 16-21. Her run, highlighted by the win over Yamaguchi and a spirited quarterfinal effort, was a strong showing at the Super 750 event.
