BCCI keeps Agarkar future in suspense

Mumbai, Sep 18 (UNI) The BCCI on Friday kept chief selector Ajit Agarkar's future hanging in the balance, with its 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) authorising the board's office-bearers to take a later call on the composition of the men's senior and junior selection committees.
The decision assumes significance as Agarkar's tenure as chairman of the senior men's selection committee is due to end in October, but the AGM neither announced an extension nor set in motion the appointment of his successor.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla confirmed that the General Body had handed the decision to the office-bearers.
"Regarding the selectors (in both senior and junior men's committees), an authorisation has been taken and we will decide about the selectors later," Shukla told reporters after the AGM.
The move leaves Agarkar in place for now, but without clarity on whether he will continue beyond his current tenure.
Agarkar took charge as chairman of the senior selection committee in July 2023 and has since been central to selection decisions concerning the Indian team. His continuation will now depend on a separate decision by the board's authorised office-bearers.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has emerged in reports as a possible contender for the post if the BCCI decides against extending Agarkar's tenure. Patel is currently an assistant coach with Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.
The BCCI, however, has not officially named Patel or any other candidate, and any appointment would have to follow the board's prescribed selection process.
The uncertainty comes even as Agarkar continues to be involved in the team's affairs. He recently attended India's T20I matches against Afghanistan in New Delhi along with fellow selectors R P Singh and Ajay Ratra.
Separately, the AGM re-elected Arun Singh Dhumal and M Khairul Jamal Majumdar to the IPL Governing Council.
The General Body also approved the audited accounts for 2025-26, the annual budget for 2026-27 and the appointment of auditors for the coming financial year.
Domestic umpires and match referees are set for an enhanced payment structure following approval of revised payments and grade reclassification.
The AGM also deferred the proposed affiliate membership bid of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over legal issues and approved an updated Age Verification Policy and a new Internal Committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Policy.
Shukla further clarified that there was no discussion on changing the venue of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test scheduled in Ranchi.
"No, there was no discussion about the venue for that Test match," he said.
For now, Agarkar remains the senior selection committee chairman, but the BCCI has deliberately left the question of his continuation open, making the office-bearers' next decision crucial for the future composition of India's selection setup.
