Sooryavanshi to lead Bihar in SMAT opener before joining India A

New Delhi, Nov 7 (UNI) Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to captain Bihar's senior team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, but the teenager will be available for only their opening match before joining the India A squad for the Rising Stars Emerging Asia Cup in Qatar.
The 14-year-old has been handed the leadership role despite his brief availability, with the Bihar selectors keen to recognise his growing stature in T20 cricket and his attacking approach with the bat.

The selection committee, which met in Patna on Friday, spoke to Sooryavanshi before confirming the decision.
Bihar, placed in Elite Group B, will open their campaign against Saurashtra in Indore on November 14. Sooryavanshi is scheduled to travel to Doha on November 16 for the Emerging Asia Cup, which runs from November 19 to 29. The SMAT Super League begins on November 30, with the final scheduled for December 6.
Vice-captain Suraj Kashyap will take over the leadership responsibilities once Sooryavanshi leaves. The appointment marks the teenager's first stint as captain of Bihar's senior side and will also make him the youngest player to lead a team in T20 cricket.

Hardik Pandya misses out on Krunal-led Baroda squad

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been left out of Baroda's squad for the 2026 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as he continues his recovery from a tibial bone stress injury.

The all-rounder has not played competitive cricket since the IPL 2026 season and last represented India in the T20 World Cup final on March 8. His return was expected to be delayed after the shin injury ruled him out of a proposed appearance in India A's one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry.
Meanwhile, Hardik’s brother Krunal will continue as the team’s captain, with Atit Sheth named
vice-captain.

Baroda have been placed in Elite Group A alongside defending champions Jharkhand, Bengal, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh and Mizoram.
