Century by Pradosh Ranjan, Baba Indrajith's 77, puts TN in command against Uttarakhand

Chennai, Oct 19 (UNI) A fine century by lefthander Pradosh Ranjan Paul (136) and a patient 77 by Baba Indrajith and their big third wicket stand, put hosts Tamil Nadu in command against Uttarkhand on the second day of the Elite Group-D Ranji Trophy cricket match at the M.A.Chidambaram stadium here on Monday.
Their 171 run third wicket association, which the other batters failed to consolidate, helped Tamil Nadu, who were eventually bowled out for 313 runs, secure a handy 179 run first innings lead.
Uttarakhand were nind for one in 7 overs in their second innings at close.
Earlier, resuming at 85 for 2 in reply to Uttarkhand's 134 all out, and the wicket offering good bounce for the pacers and also for spinners, the overnight Tamil Nadu pair of Pradosh Ranjan Paul and Baba Indrajith negotiated the Uttarakhand attack with aplomb and with a straight bat.
They milked the bowling picking runs in ones and two as the boundaries were at a premium. But the most important thing was the home team did not lose any wicket in the session and the pair remained unbeaten when players trooped out for lunch, with Tamil Nadu, stretching the score to 180 for two, adding a mere 95 runs in about 30 overs.
The slow pace of run scoring continued in the post-lunch session also. The confidence of the batters grew, the third wicket stand blossomed under hot sun and the first innings lead kept increasing. When it appeared that the second session too would remain wicketless, came the double breakthrough for Uttarakhand with a few overs remaining for the tea break.
Baba Indrajith, who resumed at 9 not out and reached his 32nd first class half century at the stroke of lunch, was trapped in front by leftarm spinner Mayank Mishra, who got good purchase from the wicket. Indrajith scored 77 in 217 balls with five fours and added
171 runs for the third wicket in 63.3 overs, even as Pradosh Ranjan (37 not out overnight) reached his 9th first class hundred. The home team lost one more wicket that of middle order batsman C.Andre Siddarth who struck four boundaries in his breezy 12-ball 18 and was castled by Mayank.
In the post tea session, it was a repeat story of what had happened in the tournament opener against Rajasthan at Jaipur last week. The rest of the batsmen failed to build on the solid platform and fell cheaply with the visiting side spinners Mayank and off-spinner Avneeesh Sudha striking in tandem to hasten the end of TN innings.
Pradosh Ranjan Paul who held firmly at one end was the eighth batsman to be dismissed after scoring 136 runs in 279 balls with 12 fours, as the home were all out for 313 in 109 overs. Tamil Nadu lost their last eight wickets for 78 runs in 26.2 overs, squandering the advantage in the final session, a replica of the collapse seen in the last match.
For Uttarkhand Mayank returned with a five wicket haiul, while Avneesh bagged four wickets.
Trailing behind by 179 runs, Uttarkhand were 9/1 in their second innings with TN skipper and leftarm spinner Saikishore, who took four wickets in the first innings, opened the bowling and struck in the very first over removing opener Aarav Mahajan.
With the wicket giving good assistance for spinners, the visitors face an uphill task on the third morning.
