Talwar leads Indian charge at DP World India Championship

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) India’s leading professionals will have more than home advantage at stake when they take on defending champion Tommy Fleetwood, career Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy and a formidable international field at the USD 4 million DP World India Championship, with the season-ending tournament also set to decide the DP World PGTI Order of Merit title and a coveted pathway to the DP World Tour.
Saptak Talwar, Khalin Joshi and Veer Ahlawat, the top three in the 2026 DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) Order of Merit, will spearhead the Indian challenge at the Delhi Golf Club this week in the prestigious championship, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and DP World PGTI.
The tournament assumes added significance for the Indian professionals as the Order of Merit champion will earn full playing rights on the DP World Tour for the 2026-27 season, making the final standings a potentially career-defining contest.
Talwar, 27, heads the standings with season earnings of Rs 99.59 lakh, holding an advantage of more than Rs 22 lakh over Joshi. His campaign has been marked by victory at the Indorama Ventures Open and seven additional top-10 finishes. Regular appearances on the HotelPlanner Tour in Europe and his recent representation of India at the Asian Games have further strengthened his credentials.
With the Order of Merit title within reach, Talwar will seek to convert a consistent season into the biggest prize of his domestic career.
“Being the Order of Merit leader, there’s a sense of responsibility and a little bit of pressure. But I think it's also a place of privilege,” Talwar said ahead of the championship.
His familiarity with the Delhi Golf Club could prove valuable, though he stressed the importance of staying focused on the immediate task rather than the standings.
Joshi, meanwhile, arrives as one of the most dangerous contenders after producing the best season of his career. The 34-year-old has won four tournaments this year, including three through wire-to-wire victories, and occupies second place with earnings of Rs 77.32 lakh.
A former winner of an Asian Tour event at the Delhi Golf Club in 2018, Joshi has both the form and course experience to challenge for the championship and the Order of Merit crown. His recent performances have also transformed him into a serious threat to Talwar's lead.
Joshi attributed his success to a more composed and confident approach on the course, saying the improvement in his mindset had been the biggest change in his game this season.
Ahlawat, third in the standings with Rs 65.97 lakh in earnings, will look to build on a season of remarkable consistency. The former DP World PGTI Order of Merit champion has registered nine top-10 finishes, the highest by any player on the domestic tour this season.
Having competed on the DP World Tour in 2025, Ahlawat brings experience of playing at the highest level. He also represented India at the Asian Games and believes the strong international field presents an opportunity for Indian golfers to demonstrate their capabilities.
The 30-year-old highlighted the importance of accuracy, course management and a sharp short game at the Delhi Golf Club, where aggressive driving alone may not be enough to deliver a strong result.
Reigning DP World PGTI Order of Merit champion Yuvraj Sandhu will also be a key figure in the Indian challenge. A previous winner at the Delhi Golf Club, Sandhu heads into the tournament after a top-five finish at the Kapil Dev Invitational Tour Championship last week.
Honey Baisoya, Akshay Sharma, Rashid Khan and Om Prakash Chouhan, placed fourth to seventh in the Order of Merit, will add further depth to the home contingent. All four have recorded victories this season, while Baisoya and Rashid possess the added advantage of having grown up playing at the Delhi Golf Club. Rashid has also won one of his two international titles at the venue.
The top 24 players in the current DP World PGTI Order of Merit earned qualification through the season-long Race to DP World India Championship, introduced this year to reward consistent performances and prize money earnings.
The format has given the domestic season a decisive finale, with the leading Indian professionals now facing an opportunity to measure themselves against international stars while competing for a title that could reshape their careers.
With Fleetwood defending his crown and McIlroy among the headline attractions, the championship will place Indian golf firmly in the international spotlight. For Talwar, Joshi and Ahlawat, however, the contest carries an additional dimension: the chance to finish the season as India's leading professional and secure a place on the DP World Tour.
