Phillips, Jacobs hit fifties as New Zealand post 180/5 against India

Christchurch, Oct 24 (UNI) Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs struck impressive half-centuries to steer New Zealand to 180 for five in 20 overs against India in the second T20 International at Hagley Oval here on Saturday.
Put in to bat after India won the toss and elected to bowl, New Zealand suffered an early collapse before Phillips and Jacobs combined in a match-defining 116-run fourth-wicket partnership to revive the innings.
Phillips smashed 70 off 43 balls, including four fours and four sixes, while Jacobs scored 58 off 46 deliveries, hitting five boundaries and a six.
India made an early impact through their pace attack, with Arshdeep Singh dismissing Tim Seifert (7) in the second over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Daryl Mitchell (6), caught by Tilak Varma, while Prince Yadav bowled Finn Allen (16) to leave the hosts struggling at 41 for three in 5.2 overs.
Phillips counter-attacked with a series of aggressive strokes, using his feet against the spinners and capitalising on loose deliveries. He reached his half-century off Bhuvneshwar Kumar before accelerating with several sixes, including a lofted hit over extra cover.
Jacobs provided able support, mixing powerful strokes with calculated aggression. He brought up his fifty with a boundary off Prince Yadav and helped New Zealand cross the 150-run mark through their substantial fourth-wicket stand.
Phillips' innings ended in the 18th over when he was caught by Naman Dhir at deep point off Arshdeep Singh, breaking the partnership at 157. Jacobs departed shortly afterwards, caught by Axar Patel at long-off off Nitish Kumar Reddy for 58.
Michael Bracewell supplied a late burst, smashing a six and a four off the final two deliveries to lift New Zealand to 180 for five.
Arshdeep Singh was India's leading wicket-taker with two for 33 in four overs. Prince Yadav returned figures of one for 30, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar took one for 50 and Nitish Kumar Reddy one for 31.
Despite losing three wickets in the powerplay, New Zealand recovered through Phillips and Jacobs' partnership before finishing strongly, setting India a target of 181 runs.
