Campbell-Greaves set records with 135-run opening blitz in ODI opener at The Greenfield

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 27 (UNI) For a while, the Greenfield International Stadium looked less like India's fortress and more like West Indies' playground.
John Campbell and Justin Greaves walked out with uncomplicated intent — see the ball, hit the ball — and by the time India found a way through, the West Indies openers had already rewritten a few lines of the record book.
The pair put together 135 for the first wicket in the opening ODI on Sunday, the third-highest opening partnership by West Indies against India on Indian soil, behind only Gordon Greenidge and Phil Simmons' 164 at Thiruvananthapuram in 1988 and Greenidge and Desmond Haynes' 149 at Indore in 1983.
Asked to bat first, West Indies raced to 136 for one after 20 overs, with Campbell's aggressive 62 off 60 balls setting the tone and Greaves providing the ballast at the other end.
It was a stand with history sprinkled through it. West Indies had not produced a 100-plus opening partnership against India since Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis put together 115 at Port of Spain in 2019. On Indian soil, the previous such effort was Gayle and Daren Hinds' 132 at Vadodara in 2002.
Campbell and Greaves also became the first West Indies opening pair since Gayle and Runako Morton in 2009 to score 50-plus apiece against India in an ODI.
Campbell, meanwhile, was not in the mood for nostalgia. He attacked the Indian bowling with six fours and three sixes, making his 62 off 60 an entertaining mixture of muscle and timing.
Then came Kuldeep Yadav.
The spinner had been engaged in a little duel with Campbell, and eventually had the last word. Campbell sat down to sweep a flighted delivery outside off, but the ball bounced more than he expected. The resulting top-edge ballooned towards short fine leg.
Prasidh Krishna moved to his left, slid across and held a smart catch.

For India, it was the wicket they had been waiting for. For Campbell, it was the end of an innings that had done precisely what an opener's innings is supposed to do — disturb the opposition's plans and give his side a head start.
Greaves stayed on as West Indies reached 136 for one after 20 overs, leaving India with the less enviable task of containing a side that had already made itself comfortable at the crease.
The records were merely the footnotes. The more immediate story was simpler: West Indies had arrived swinging.
