Maha: Four injured as speeding SUV hits several vehicles & residents in case of drunk driving in Mumbai, driver arrested

Mumbai, Oct 16 (UNI) Four people were injured after a speeding SUV allegedly driven by an intoxicated motorist rammed into several vehicles and struck residents near Panjarapole Circle in eastern suburb of Chembur, Mumbai, in intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
Trombay police have arrested the driver, identified as Mujawar Sheikh, 42, and registered a case against him.
According to the report, the SUV, carrying four occupants, was travelling from Chembur towards South Mumbai at high speed. Instead of entering the Eastern Freeway, the vehicle turned towards a connecting road leading to the Panjarapole residential settlement.
The driver allegedly lost control while speeding and collided with an autorickshaw, a two-wheeler and several taxis parked along the roadside around 1 am. Local residents attempted to stop the vehicle, but it continued moving and struck four people sitting outside their homes.
The SUV eventually came to a halt after crashing into the boundary structure of a house. Angered by the incident, residents allegedly assaulted all four occupants and vandalised the vehicle.
On receiving information, Trombay police rushed to the scene and shifted the injured residents to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, where they were undergoing treatment. Police subsequently registered an offence against Sheikh and arrested him.
Eyewitnesses claimed that all four young men travelling in the SUV were intoxicated. They reportedly lived in South Mumbai and had travelled towards the Eastern Freeway for a late-night drive.
Panjarapole is generally a busy locality, and the late hour of the accident reportedly helped prevent fatalities. However, several vehicles parked along the road sustained extensive damage during the incident.
The collision and subsequent confrontation created tension in the residential area before police intervened. Although four residents suffered injuries and multiple vehicles were damaged, no deaths were reported.
