Oppn claims victory as Maha shelves Hindi education policy

Mumbai, June 30 (UNI) Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray declared the Maharashtra government’s withdrawal of controversial Hindi language directives resulted from overwhelming public and opposition pressure, as the state legislature’s monsoon session commenced today.
Thackeray joined opposition legislators in a symbolic "Mi Marathi" (I am Marathi) protest on Vidhan Bhavan steps, hours after the session began.
The protest followed Sunday’s Cabinet decision to revoke two government resolutions (GRs) implementing a three-language policy requiring Hindi instruction for grades 1-5. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis simultaneously announced an Education Committee. chaired by Narendra Jadhav,to re-evaluate language policy.
"Pressure triumphed over power," Thackeray stated, asserting the reversal reflected resistance from citizens and opposition parties against "Hindi imposition".
Despite the policy withdrawal, opposition leaders expressed skepticism.
"We demand written confirmation of this rollback. Trust in this government is exhausted," insisted Thackeray, son of former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.
He accused the ruling BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction of attempting to thwart potential unity between Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray.
Opposition figures highlighted broader concerns. LoP Ambadas Danve noted: "While partially meeting our demand, forming another committee reveals their hesitation."
NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil criticised the reversal as evidence of administrative disconnection. "This U-turn exposes both alienation from public sentiment and governmental dysfunction."
The monsoon session, running through July 18, opened with obituary references. Opposition parties signalled intent to challenge the government on multiple fronts including farm loan waivers, agricultural pricing, inflation, employment, education reforms and alleged administrative irregularities.
