Fadnavis says regime change possible only through electoral mandate

Nagpur, Oct 18 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday asserted that a change of government in India could be brought about only through democratic elections, maintaining that efforts to overthrow the established order by undermining the Constitution would not succeed.
Reacting to Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray’s remarks on regime change, Fadnavis took a swipe at the former chief minister, pointing to the split in his own party as he questioned his political position.
Thackeray had on Saturday endorsed senior advocate Prashant Bhushan’s call for regime change while raising concerns over alleged violence against participants in protests organised in Delhi by the Cockroach Janta Party and other political outfits.
Referring to the 2022 split in the undivided Shiv Sena, Fadnavis said the party’s departure from Hindutva and the principles espoused by its founder Balasaheb Thackeray had prompted those committed to the founder’s ideology to break away and establish the real Shiv Sena.
He said political power in India was decided by Parliament and the electorate, rather than street protests or attempts to destabilise the government.
“Anyone seeking a change of government must contest elections, win the confidence of the people and obtain their mandate,” Fadnavis said.
He also expressed confidence that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would return to power.
Citing political turmoil in neighbouring countries, including Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the Chief Minister cautioned against attempts to create similar instability in India.
He said the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional framework, shaped by the Constitution drafted under the leadership of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, would thwart any such designs.
