Technical brain bypass surgery in Pune saves life of software engineer

Pune, June 15 (UNI) A 32-year-old software engineer from Pune, with recurrent ischemic episodes and was partially blind, underwent Superficial Temporal Artery to Middle Cerebral Artery (STA-MTA) bypass surgery by a neurosurgeon at Manipal Hospitals here recently.
It is colloquially called brain bypass surgery.
The patient had recurrent ischemic episodes. He was blind in one eye after a stroke.
The surgery was successfully performed, after which the patient has fully recovered and regained his eyesight, said a release on Sunday.
Dr Amit Dhakoji, HoD and Consultant - Neurosurgery, Manipal Hospital, Baner, was quoted as saying in a release, "This case was complex. So, we did STA-MCA bypass surgery. In this technique, the healthy artery of the head, the superficial temporal artery, is rerouted and anastomosed to the viable part of the middle cerebral artery away from the obstruction. This rerouting allowed blood flow to be restarted in the damaged part of the brain. After the surgery, the patient's condition improved remarkably. ... the eye which was unable to see even partially recovered."
Anand Mote, Cluster Director, Manipal Hospital, said, "... This surgery has demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork, state-of-the-art technology, and extensive clinical knowledge."
