Five killed, 7 injured as passengers fall off local train at Mumbra station

Mumbai, June 9 (UNI) Five people were killed and seven others injured on Monday when at least 10 passengers fell off an overcrowded local train that was about to arrive at Mumbra railway station in Maharashtra from Kasara, said police.

Anil Shinde, senior police inspector of Mumbra police station, said the accident occurred around 9 am. "We rushed to the spot to find five people dead and 7 injured. The victims were rushed to the nearby Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa out of which the four injured went to Jupiter hospital on their own,” Shinde added.

Authorities attributed the tragedy to severe overcrowding, with many passengers reportedly hanging onto the train doors at the time.

Railway officials and police promptly arrived at the scene, and the injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. An investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident is currently underway.

The accident has disrupted local train services on the affected route. Further details are awaited as rescue efforts continue.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed sorrow over the accident. “ I offer my heartfelt condolences to the deceased. The local administration is coordinating efforts on the ground. I pray to the Almighty for the swift recovery of the injured. The railway department has initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident,” he said.
