Constitution supreme, India not Bangladesh or Nepal, says Fadnavis

Mumbai, Oct 16 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today emphasised that the Constitution is supreme in the country where decisions will be made in parliament and not on the streets like in Bangladesh.
Speaking at an event organised at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run Mumbai Public School on Bhawani Shankar Road in Dadar West this evening, he said, “This is India, not Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. They do not have the Constitution of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar."
“As long as we have the Constitution, the parliament will take decisions. In the last few years, there have been many attempts to attack the Constitution and democracy. However, this Constitution is so strong that no one has been able to touch India's democracy,” he said.
“Those who intend to create a situation like in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal or Sri Lanka should keep this in mind. In this country, the Constitution has given everyone the right to get justice. The Constitution also mentions what to do if someone adopts unconstitutional means,” Fadnavis said.
Earlier in day, the Chief Minister had attacked statements allegedly made by protestors in Delhi that they were inspired by political events in Bangladesh.
Fadnavis said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that the Constitution is more important than the Gita, the Bible and the Quran.
“Our country was enslaved for a thousand years because we forgot the principles of society. It created inequality and led us to slavery. But the Constitution has established equality. The Constitution is not just a possible document, it also brings equality of opportunity. In such a big country, where there are several castes, religions and regions, the Constitution has shown how they can work together,” he remarked.
Fadnavis released two Marathi booklets ‘Smart Citizen’ and ‘Student Inspiration’ to school students in the presence of retired Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai.
As part of the programme, Fadnavis and Gavai explained lessons from the two booklets and interacted with students, allowing them to speak directly with the Chief Minister and retired Chief Justice of India Gavai.
The initiative aims to instil constitutional values, fundamental duties, democratic principles and social responsibility among students from Class 1 to Class 10 in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run schools.
According to the civic body, the programme will go beyond textbook learning, using activities, projects, discussions and interactive sessions to help students understand the importance of responsible citizenship in their daily lives.
