Dhaka University students trample on images of Jinnah and former Jamaat chief Ghulam Azam in protest against photo display

Dhaka, Sep 15 (UNI) A controversy over the display of photographs of Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah at the Dhaka University Central Students’ union (Ducsu) archive gallery escalated on Tuesday, with students placing the images of Jinnah and pro-Pakistan former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Ghulam Azam on the floor and trampling on them.
Around noon on Tuesday, a group of students from the 2025-26 academic session placed the photographs of Jinnah and Ghulam Azam on the floor at the entrance and inside the Ducsu archive gallery before trampling on them.
The students said they were protesting against the display of photographs of Jinnah and the then Pakistan Chhatra Sangha leader Abdul Malek, who was an Islamist and opposed to the Bengali identity, in the gallery.
Ash Shams, a student in the Department of English for Speakers of Other Languages, said students expected elected Ducsu representatives to uphold Bangladesh’s history and political values.
At a separate press conference, the Bangladesh Chhatra Federation’s Dhaka University unit criticised the inclusion of Jinnah’s 1948 speech in the archive, arguing that the display did not show the student protests against his position.
The group said it had removed Jinnah’s photograph from the archive and replaced it with a photograph of a public protest against former Jamaat chief Ghulam Azam.
On Monday, Abu Tayeb Habildar, a student of the Department of Urdu at Dhaka University and a candidate for the vice-president post in the 2025 Ducsu election, had entered the museum and broken the frames of Jinnah’s photographs and tore them apart.
Later on Monday afternoon, Arko Barua, organising secretary of the Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, put up a photograph depicting Ghulam Azam being beaten with shoes in place of Jinnah’s photographs.
The Dhaka University administration has also taken a firm stance over the display of Jinnah’s photograph.
The administration said displaying photographs of individuals whose presence or legacy conflicts with the Language Movement, the historic Liberation Struggle and the core spirit of Bangladesh’s independence is unacceptable at the university or in the Ducsu museum.
It also said administrative action would be taken against those involved in the incidents in accordance with university rules.
A three-member committee, headed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (admin), has also been formed to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, Ducsu leaders have called for action against students accused of damaging photographs, documents and other materials inside the gallery.
Ducsu General Secretary SM Farhad, defending the display of Jinnah’s photograph, said it was accompanied by a historical statement on the state language question.
