Bangladesh HM Salahuddin Ahmed says Awami League will not be allowed to resume political activities

Dhaka, Nov 6 (UNI) As former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina has reiterated that she remains firmly committed to returning to her country from exile in India by December 2026, the country's Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the people will not allow the banned AL party to resume political activities.
Describing the party as “autocratic, fascist and murderous”, Ahmed said: “The party that killed people, committed genocide, carried out oppression and persecution, and has still neither sought forgiveness nor expressed remorse will not be allowed to do politics in this country.”
The minister was speaking at the closing session of the 104th annual two-day religious gathering at Babunagar Madrasa in Fatikchhari, Chattogram.
Sheikh Hasina, in an interview to AP, acknowledged the high risk of her arrest, imprisonment, or violence upon her arrival in Bangladesh, particularly after a special Bangladeshi tribunal sentenced her to death in absentia.
She stated: "If death is my destiny, I would rather die on the soil of my own country, among my own people. So, I will return to Bangladesh. That decision has not changed." She added that she cannot spend the rest of her life watching her people suffer from a distance.
Asked if she expected India or the United States to pressure Dhaka to guarantee her safety, Hasina rejected the need for external diplomatic assistance. She stated: "I value friendship and cooperation with all nations... But I do not need the blessing of a foreign power to return to my own country."
Home Minister Ahmed also praised Hifazat-e-Islam Bangladesh for continuing its protests against what he described as the previous AL government’s fascist, anti-Islamic and illegal rule, despite the organisation not being a political party.
He said Hifazat leader, Ameer Maulana Mohibullah Babunagari, had led the demonstrations before the post-fascist election and during the wider movement.
"Bangladesh had taken 23 years to achieve independence, while it took another 16 to 17 years to free the country from the grip of a fascist and anti-clerical government," the minister said.
He added that religious scholars and students had sacrificed their lives during the struggle, but many of those killed remained unidentified or their burial places unknown.
Citing UN estimates, Ahmed said around 1,400 people were killed during the July-August mass uprising. He also alleged that approximately 3,000 people had been subjected to enforced disappearance during the preceding 16 to 17 years of Awami League rule.
“I was one of them. The Almighty had decreed that I would survive. I am alive today because of your prayers and Allah's mercy,” he said, adding that around 7,000 people had faced different forms of killing and torture.
He further claimed that hundreds of thousands had suffered persecution through attacks and politically motivated cases, questioning whether the country wanted the return of the forces responsible.
The minister also alleged that groups responsible for recent attempts to create unrest in the garment sector were linked to the former AL regime.
Ahmed accused some political groups of using Islam for electoral purposes, arguing that their manifestos did not contain meaningful commitments to Islamic principles.
“Some declare themselves Islamic parties, but the term ‘Aqimuddin’ has been removed from their party manifestos. They say one thing in public but fail to show evidence of it in their documents,” he said.
