Nearly 10 civilians killed in deadly Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan's Helmand, Kunar provinces

Kabul, Oct 1 (UNI) At least 10 civilians, most of them children, were killed in Pakistani airstrikes on Afghanistan's Kunar and Helmand provinces, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) today.
The UN mission said nine others were injured in the strikes, which took place amid renewed tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan following several months of relative calm. It called for an immediate de-escalation, warning that civilians continue to bear the brunt of cross-border hostilities.
The Taliban initially reported that nine civilians, including women and children, had been killed and 11 others wounded. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the strikes targeted residential areas, destroying three houses across Kunar and Helmand. Local residents also reported damage to homes and civilian casualties.
Pakistan, however, continues to claim that its strikes were a part of a "well planned and calibrated" operation targeting militant hideouts at two locations in Afghanistan.
According to the Pakistani Ministry of Information, as per initial reports, at least 22 militants had been killed and weapons and ammunition destroyed. It also claimed that precautions had been taken to prevent civilian casualties.
The strikes come amid renewed tensions between Islamabad and Kabul. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban authorities of allowing armed groups, including Islamist militias like the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), to operate from Afghan territory and launch attacks inside Pakistan.
The Taliban authorities have flatly rejected the allegations, maintaining that Pakistan's inability to provide security within its borders is an internal issue and the state's failure and is not Afghanistan's responsibility.
UNAMA has repeatedly called on both sides to protect civilians and comply with international humanitarian law. The mission has previously documented significant civilian casualties resulting from cross-border violence and urged both parties to uphold the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution.
