US First Lady Melania Trump secures temporary ceasefire between Russia, Ukraine on frontline town of Alyoshki

Moscow/Kyiv, Oct 23 (UNI) Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire in the frontline town of Alyoshki in Russia’s Kherson Region to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations, following mediation by US First Lady Melania Trump, the White House has announced.
The localised truce is scheduled to begin on October 29 and will temporarily halt military action to allow aid into the town and establish a safe passage for civilians seeking to leave, according to the first lady’s office. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv has publicly commented on the announcement, although Ukrainian officials have indicated that a tentative agreement has been reached in the Russian-occupied territory.
Alyoshki, near the front line in Kherson Region, has been cut off from essential supplies and basic services for months. Drone attacks and remotely laid mines have disrupted aid deliveries and evacuation efforts, leaving an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 civilians trapped, many of them elderly.
Melania Trump’s office said she had worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to establish the terms of the ceasefire. The first lady, who had previously expressed a willingness to support humanitarian efforts in the town, described the situation as “dire”, calling Alyoshki a “frontline war city on the brink of disaster”.
“The remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water,” she said.
The first lady’s office said she had initiated discussions with both sides and helped establish the agreement’s objectives, procedures, timing and terms in her role as “Exclusive Intermediary”.
Civilian representatives from Russia and Ukraine are expected to visit residents in their homes to assess their needs and determine what assistance is required. Those wishing to evacuate will receive co-ordinated support and transport to their preferred destination, Ms Trump said.
“I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” she added.
Moscow has accused Kyiv of deliberately worsening the humanitarian situation by targeting civilian supply routes and obstructing aid deliveries. Russian Foreign Ministry envoy Rodion Miroshnik previously described the situation as a “medieval blockade using modern methods”, accusing Ukrainian forces of preventing residents from leaving.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump discussed the crisis during a telephone call earlier this month. According to the Kremlin, the two leaders agreed that Russian Human Rights commissioner Yana Lantratova would maintain contact with Melania Trump’s office on humanitarian efforts.
The announcement comes as Trump’s efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war have yet to produce a lasting settlement. Despite promising to end the conflict on his first day back in office, the US president has recently voiced growing frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, saying Ukraine should have a new leader.
Trump also played down concerns over Russia’s military actions in remarks to reporters earlier this week, saying: “Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven’t been doing much.”
US special envoy Steve Witkoff has also faced criticism after describing Putin as a “humanitarian” following the release of American citizen Stephen Hubbard.
