World Bank, IAEA sign pact to encourage nuclear energy use in developing countries

Paris, June 26 (UNI) The World Bank and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today
signed an agreement to jointly support safe, secure and responsible use of nuclear energy in
developing countries.

The agreement, signed by World Bank President Ajay Banga and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, reflects a new, broader approach to electrification, prioritising accessibility, affordability and reliability while managing emissions.

With electricity demand in developing countries expected to more than double by 2035, the World Bank is embracing a broader range of energy options, including nuclear, to help countries meet their energy needs in ways that align with national development goals and climate commitments.

The IAEA Director General described the partnership as a “milestone” reflecting a shift in global thinking on nuclear energy. He said the agreement opens the door for other multilateral development banks and private investors to consider nuclear as a viable tool for energy security and sustainable prosperity.

Under the agreement, the two will collaborate in enhancing the World Bank’s technical understanding of nuclear safety, safeguards, new technologies, fuel cycles and waste management, supporting the safe extension of existing nuclear plants many of which are nearing the end of their 40-year design life span.

More than 30 countries currently operate nuclear power plants, generating about 9 percent of global electricity and 25 percent low-carbon power. Thirty more countries, most of them in the developing world, are considering nuclear energy or are working with the IAEA to develop the necessary infrastructure for safe deployment. The partnership between the two will bridge technical knowledge gaps, facilitate financing pathways and ensure that nuclear adoption prioritizes safety, security, and sustainability, according to IAEA.
