One killed, four injured in shooting spree in Paris suburb

Paris, Oct 23 (UNI) One person was killed and at least four others were injured in a shooting spree in the suburbs southwest of Paris, prompting a terrorism investigation, French authorities said on Friday.
The shootings took place at three locations in Trappes and La Verrière, around 15 miles southwest of central Paris, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said.
The attacker allegedly fired from a vehicle using what Nuñez described as a “military-grade weapon, or at least an automatic weapon”.
The suspect was arrested in the nearby town of Coignières at around 10.30am local time on Friday.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the incident as “very serious”, saying the suspect had been apprehended and placed in police custody.
He added that security forces and judicial authorities had been fully mobilised.
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the investigation, with prosecutors examining whether the attack was motivated by racial or religious hatred.
The motive remains unclear.
Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes, told BFMTV a man had fired shots from his car and "appeared to be firing at random and seemed intent on carrying out a massacre".
He said the person killed was of African origin, as was one of those wounded. "It is a miracle that there were not more victims," he said, adding that the attacker fired at various locations, including a playground.
Rabeh said a 12-year-old girl was also among the injured.
French media reports suggested the number of injured could be higher, although police had not confirmed the victims’ identities or ages.
The attack comes as France prepares for further protests on Saturday over the cost of living and the state of schools, with the government in Paris now deploying significantly larger security presence in an effort to prevent a repeat of the widespread unrest and violence reported the previous week.
Nuñez said around 70,000 security personnel would be on duty. Major museums, including the Louvre, are due to remain closed.
