Eight die in landslide in northwest Colombia

Bogota, June 25 (UNI) At least eight people were killed and five others injured yesterday in a landslide in the municipality of Bello, Antioquia department, in northwestern Colombia, local authorities said.

"With deep sorrow, I inform you that at around 3:25 a.m. today, a landslide occurred in the Granizal sector. So far, we have confirmed eight deaths and five injuries," said Mayor Lorena Gonzalez.

The landslide, triggered by the overflow of the La Negra stream, affected 10 homes in the El Pinar neighborhood, she added.

Antioquia Governor Andres Julian said the full resources of the department had been mobilised to respond to the emergency.

Rescue teams continue searching for the missing, while residents are evacuating the area and seeking shelter in makeshift camps due to the risk of further landslides.

"What we need most right now is solidarity," said local resident Carlos Andres Mesa. "We need blankets, food, and prayers that the stream doesn't overflow again like it did this morning."
