India – Bangladesh yet to finalise dates for PM Tarique Rahman’s New Delhi visit

New Delhi/Dhaka, Sep 26 (UNI) New Delhi and Dhaka have yet to finalise dates for Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible India visit, with India’s crowded diplomatic calendar leaving only a narrow window for the trip, people familiar with the matter said.
Rahman was invited for a bilateral visit as well as to attend the recent BRICS Summit in New Delhi, but Dhaka declined to participate in the summit amid continuing strains in bilateral ties. The two sides have not held substantive discussions on fixing dates for a bilateral visit since then, the people said.
“There is an invitation for a bilateral visit and it is for the Bangladesh side to take a call,” one person said. “As of now, there is no finality or clarity on dates for a visit.”
Scheduling has also been complicated by India’s diplomatic commitments and the absence of Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman from Dhaka. Khalilur Rahman, who was elected president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in June, is in New York for the high-level UNGA week and is expected to remain there into October.
People familiar with the matter said Tarique Rahman was unlikely to travel to New Delhi without the foreign minister.
India is due to host Swiss President Guy Parmelin and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in October, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to travel to the Philippines for the ASEAN Summit from November 16 to 18.
Modi is also expected to visit the US, Canada and Belgium around the middle of December, leaving November as the main window for a possible visit by Rahman, the people said.
New Delhi had earlier signalled an interest in resetting ties with Dhaka, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attending the state funeral of former Bangladesh prime minister Khaleda Zia in December 2025, while Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla travelled to Dhaka for Rahman’s inauguration in February.
Relations, however, have remained difficult to restore.
Asked recently about a possible visit by Rahman, Dhaka’s conditions and the state of bilateral ties, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi wanted a “positive, constructive and forward-looking relationship with Bangladesh”.
“We are ready to discuss all bilateral issues within the structured mechanisms that we have right now,” he said.
Several issues remain unresolved, including restrictions on trade through land borders, transit access to major land and sea ports and the renewal of the Ganga Waters Treaty, which is due to expire in December.
People familiar with the matter said the two sides were still far from agreeing on terms for renewing the Ganga pact, potentially adding another complication to the timing of any high-level visit.
