Over 200 arrested in Germany after violence erupts following Gen Z protests

Berlin, Nov 1 (UNI) More than 200 people were arrested in Germany after violent clashes broke out in several cities following largely peaceful Generation Z demonstrations demanding increased education funding, better social policies and relief from rising living costs.
Police said the violence erupted in Hamburg, Frankfurt and Berlin after radical groups staged separate demonstrations, erected barricades and clashed with security forces.
The main protests, organised by the Gen Z Regelt initiative in more than 30 cities, drew tens of thousands of young people who also opposed government plans to revive compulsory military service.
However, the situation deteriorated after smaller groups resorted to violence following the conclusion of the main demonstrations. Protesters allegedly hurled stones, bottles and firecrackers at police personnel, prompting authorities to deploy water cannons and special units.
In Frankfurt, masked groups allegedly vandalised shops and looted several businesses, including a gun store. Police said at least two firearms were stolen after the shop's windows were smashed. The weapons were subsequently recovered and one suspect arrested.
More than 30 people were provisionally arrested in Frankfurt, where a police vehicle was also damaged during the unrest.
In Hamburg, police took 120 people into custody after black-clad and partially masked protesters erected burning barricades near the central bus station following the main demonstration.
At least 11 police personnel were injured after protesters allegedly threw stones, bottles and pyrotechnics at them, police said. Smaller fires and disturbances were also reported in the city's eastern districts.
In Berlin, police temporarily detained up to 56 people during evening clashes in the Mitte district. The authorities said 27 police personnel sustained minor injuries after protesters allegedly pelted them with stones, bottles, eggs and firecrackers.
According to regional broadcaster WDR, other groups besides Gen Z demonstrators were involved in riots.
Cologne's police chief Johannes Hermanns said it was deeply saddening that peaceful protests were overshadowed by "extremists who had nothing but violence in mind."
In Cologne, at least five people were detained after smaller groups clashed with police near the city's cathedral.
He said it was unfortunate that young people who wanted to peacefully raise concerns about their future has been joined by groups intent on violence.
Hermanns also thanked those who participated peacefully and distanced themselves from the clashes.
