US House passes war powers resolution directing Trump to withdraw forces from Iran

Washington, Sep 16 (UNI) The US House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a war powers resolution directing President Donald Trump to remove American forces from hostilities with Iran, in the third such congressional effort to limit the administration's military action in the conflict.
The measure, sponsored by Democratic Representative Seth Moulton, passed 220-204, with 213 Democrats and seven Republicans voting in favour. One independent voted against it.
The resolution, H. Con. Res. 93, invokes the War Powers Resolution and calls on Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran. It does not require the president to remove forces needed to defend U.S. or allied personnel and facilities, according to congressional documents.
The seven Republicans who backed the measure were Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, Zach Nunn of Iowa and Nancy Mace of South Carolina.
The vote marked the third time the House has passed a similar war powers resolution concerning the Iran conflict. Previous measures have not resulted in the withdrawal of U.S. forces.
Moulton said the resolution was intended to reaffirm Congress's constitutional authority over decisions to wage war. In a statement after the vote, he said the conflict had continued despite the administration's earlier claims of military success and cited U.S. casualties and the financial cost of the operation.
The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the United States had spent about $38 billion on the conflict through Aug. 1 and that the war could cost another $2 billion to $3 billion a month if fighting continued at recent levels.
The vote came as Congress continued to debate the administration's authority to conduct military operations against Iran without a specific congressional authorization. The Trump administration has defended its actions and argued that the military campaign is necessary to address threats from Iran.
The Senate's next steps on the House measure remain uncertain. A similar war powers resolution passed by the House in July has not advanced in the Senate.
The latest House action also came a day after Republican Representative Thomas Massie introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of continuing military operations in Iran without congressional authorization. Hegseth and the Pentagon have defended the administration's actions.UNI AAB
