Russia flexes naval muscle, conducts tactical anti-submarine exercises in Baltic Sea

Moscow, May 17 (UNI) Flexing its military muscles, the Russian Navy conducted tactical drills in the Baltic Sea, with anti-submarine ships from its Baltic Fleet partaking in search and destroy exercises. The drills were part of a broader effort to enhance the fleet’s readiness in coastal defence and near-sea operations.
"The crews of the small anti-submarine ships (MPK) Zelenodolsk and Kazanets of the Baltic Fleet conducted a tactical exercise in the marine combat training grounds in the Baltic Sea to search for and destroy submarines of a simulated enemy with the simulated use of anti-submarine weapons systems," the fleet said, according to Russia’s state-owned-media, RIA Novosti.
The exercise featured coordinated submarine-hunting manoeuvres, simulated torpedo attacks, depth charge deployments, and the neutralisation of unmanned kamikaze surface craft.
"During the anti-submarine exercise, before the torpedo attack, the sailors practiced searching, detecting and maintaining contact with a submarine in cooperation with the anti-submarine helicopters KA-27 of the Baltic Fleet's naval aviation," the fleet’s press service added.
The small anti-submarine ships, Zelenodolsk and Kazanets are designed for near sea and coastal anti-submarine warfare. Each vessel is equipped with an array of weaponry, including AK-176 and AK-630 anti-aircraft guns, RBU-6000 rocket launchers, 533-mm torpedo tubes, and modern sonar systems.
The Russian Ministry of Defence has described the exercise as a success, stating that it enhanced coordination between naval and aerial units and sharpened the fleet's preparedness for real-world conflict scenarios.
The Baltic Sea remains a sensitive strategic area, especially as NATO continues to expand its footprint in the region following Finland’s accession and Sweden’s pending membership. Moscow had previously warned of retaliatory measures in response to increased Western military activity near its borders.
Western military analysts note that Russia’s Baltic Fleet, while smaller than its Northern or Black Sea counterparts, plays a crucial role in asserting control over the Kaliningrad exclave and monitoring NATO movements in northern Europe.
These drills are part of a broader pattern of increased Russian military activity across key maritime zones, as the Kremlin seeks to reinforce its strategic posture in response to NATO’s apparent attempts to encircle it.
