Yemen conflict displaced over 200,000 people since fighting resumed, says UN data

Aden, Oct 7 (UNI) More than 200,000 people have been displaced from their homes since fighting resumed in Yemen in early September, according to data released by the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Wednesday.
The IOM said the displacement crisis caused by renewed fighting between the Iran-backed Houthi group and Saudi-backed government forces had reached alarming levels, with the number of displaced people rising from 76,000 in mid-September to more than 200,000. Nearly all were forced to flee after the latest fighting began.
"People are running for their lives and finding nowhere safe to go," IOM Director General Amy Pope said, calling for increased funding to meet growing needs for food and shelter.
The escalation is the most serious fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since a UN-brokered truce largely halted cross-border attacks in 2022. The renewed conflict could alter control over parts of Yemen and affect shipping routes in the Red Sea.
The Houthis, who already control much of northern Yemen including the capital Sanaa, seized the country's entire Red Sea coast last month from Saudi-backed forces loyal to Yemen's internationally recognised government, which is based in the southern port city of Aden.
Displacement has been recorded across 10 governorates, with Taiz the worst affected. More than 3,700 people have also fled Yemen by sea to Djibouti, the IOM said.
The UN World Food Programme said on Friday that three in four families in parts of Yemen were going hungry as a result of the "absolutely devastating" impact of the renewed fighting.
