North East Regatta kicks off at Umiam lake in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 25 (UNI) Seventy-nine sailors from nine leading sailing clubs across India are competing in the 3rd North East Regatta, 2025 at Umiam lake in Meghalaya which kicked off on Sunday with clear blue skies and sunshine.
The regatta, which will conclude on May 29, is hosted by the Umiam Sailing Club and the UDAY Sailing Foundation, enjoys patronage from the Yachting Association of India and support from the International 420 Class Association of India.
Of the 79 sailors, 25 women and nine are novices, are competing in 5 categories and 11 classes demonstrating the growing inclusivity being fostered by this sport.
Ensuring a level of fairness and professionalism, the Regatta will be officiated by International Judges, Race Officers, and a National Measurer, truly emphasizing the commitment of the event to international sailing standards.
“The calm crystalline waters of the Umiam Lake and the spirit of competition in the air will together bring about an exciting and several legendary moments at the 3rd YAI North East Regatta 2025 for both the competitors and spectators alike,” an Umiam Sailing Club official said.
“The regatta is one of India's most prestigious events in the Junior National Ranking Regatta showcasing the best-ever young talent on waters of India,” they said.
Performances here will weigh heavily in selection considerations for the National Squad who will contest the Asian Games in 2026.
“The focus on creating a professional, yet sailor friendly environment has set a new benchmark for regional regattas in India, it is this kind of care, vision and details that elevates even from being good to being exceptional,” YAI vice-president, Lt Gen (retd) TSA Narayana said.
Narayana expressed delight that the Umiam Sailing Club has fielded 13 sailors making it the third largest contingent.
Meghalaya Commissioner & Secretary Tourism and Chairman of Umiam Sailing Club department, Dr. Vijay Kumar said the aim of the tourism department is to balance nature, sustainability, tourism longevity, with economic opportunities.
He also highlighted government’s comprehensive development plan of umiam Lake so that it becomes a venue for tourists, recreational and competitive activities such as sailing and rowing.
"So we have earmarked a certain space here as permanent space for the rowing establishment and the sailing establishment. Meghalaya is hosting the National Games in 2027, and Umiam will be a big venue for water sports,” Vijay said.
