Odisha restaurant fined Rs 45,100 for serving bread with dead fly

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (UNI) The Ganjam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission today imposed a penalty of Rs 45,100 on Zaikaa Restaurant at Ankuli Bypass in Berhampur for serving butter naan (bread) containing a dead fly and causing an inordinate delay in serving food.
Delivering its order, the Commission, comprising president Satish Kumar Panigrahi and member Saritri Patnaik, held the restaurant guilty of deficiency in service and unfair trade practices.
According to the complaint filed by advocate Shibajyoti Nayak, he had visited the restaurant with his family and an elderly relative on May 11, 2025. The family allegedly waited for nearly two hours for their meal, only to find a dead fly embedded in a piece of butter naan. The restaurant staff allegedly responded discourteously when the matter was brought to their notice.
Acting on the complaint, the Commission directed the restaurant to refund Rs 100 for the defective food, pay Rs 25,000 as compensation for mental agony and inconvenience, and Rs 10,000 towards litigation expenses. It also ordered the restaurant to deposit Rs 10,000 in the Berhampur Municipal Corporation fund, citing food safety concerns.
The total amount of Rs 45,100 is to be paid within 45 days, failing which interest at nine per cent per annum will be levied on the awarded amount, excluding litigation costs. UNI MK SS
