One Nation, One Election key to strengthening Indian Democracy: Kalraj Mishra

New Delhi, June 13 (UNI) The implementation of One Nation, One Election will not only strengthen Indian democracy but also open new avenues for the country's development and prosperity, former Union Minister and ex Governor Kalraj Mishra said here on Friday.

Describing the concept as crucial for India’s democratic future, Mishra emphasised that the idea transcends political affiliations.
“This is not about any one political party, but about the greater good of the nation. Simultaneous elections across the country would streamline policy planning and implementation while significantly reducing manpower strain and economic expenditure,” he explained here at an event organised by the Radheshyam Charitable Foundation.

Mishra noted that the initiative was first brought into discussion through the BJP’s 1984 manifesto and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has since pursued it with serious intent, according to a statement here by the Foundation.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Ramakant Dwivedi, Director of the India Central Asia Foundation (ICF), highlighted the need to reduce the frequency of elections to optimize national resources and administrative focus. He provided both historical context and an analytical overview of the potential advantages and limitations of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ model.

Dr. Khyati, from the medical sector, highlighted the significance of a unified electoral process in bringing about efficiency in governance while Sunil Devdhar, former BJP National Secretary, reiterated that under PM Modi’s leadership, the party is actively working to build nationwide consensus on the proposal. “Our aim is to simplify the complex electoral process and conduct all elections once every five years,” he said, as per the statement.

The event began with a solemn two-minute silence in memory of the victims of the recent Ahmedabad plane crash, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. UNI AJ SSP
