Pack your bags: CJP calls youth to Delhi for Oct 10 electoral protest

Parwinder Sandhu
New Delhi, Oct 7 (UNI) The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Wednesday announced an October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar, describing it as a youth-led mobilisation against alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and demanding wider reforms in the functioning of the Election Commission.
CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the party had formally informed the Delhi Police about the proposed gathering after submitting a letter at the Parliament Street police station. He said the organisers had also submitted an undertaking and completed the required formalities.
“We reached the Parliament Street Police Station, and I handed them a formal letter. We informed them that the 'Cockroach Janta Party' and the youth of the entire nation, all these 'cockroaches’, are set to gather at Jantar Mantar on October 10. We asked them to maintain law and order, cooperate with us, and make necessary traffic arrangements. We have provided this formal intimation,” Das said.
He clarified that the communication was an intimation rather than a request for permission to hold the protest.
“Please don't use the word permission. Who is Delhi Police to give us permission?” Das said.
Das said the police had acknowledged the notification and obtained an undertaking from the organisers.
“We have submitted the formal notification and have received the acknowledgement copy from the Delhi Police. Based on our discussions, they also obtained an undertaking from us, and we completed all the required formalities for it. We hope the Delhi Police will cooperate,” he said.
The CJP has linked the proposed protest to its allegations of “theft of votes” and “hijacking of elections”, besides concerns over the inclusion of young voters in electoral rolls.
“The youth of the country are concerned about a major issue, one that affects their future and their nation regarding the theft of votes, the hijacking of elections, and the fact that the Election Commission of India is failing to even include Gen Z in the voter lists,” Das said.
Seeking to position the mobilisation as broader than a party protest, he said young people would be at the centre of the campaign.
“I want to emphasise that this isn't just a 'Cockroach Janata Party' movement or protest; this is a Gen Z protest, a protest by the youth,” Das said.
The party has also made clear that the agitation would seek changes beyond the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
“Even if Gyanesh Kumar resigns, we will not bow down. We want proper reforms in election commission,” Das said.
The CJP has demanded Kumar's resignation and criminal proceedings against him, a halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and upcoming elections, restoration of the January 2025 voters' list followed by an independent inquiry, and changes to the law governing appointments to the Election Commission.
“This fight is not going to be easy. I appeal to everyone across the country to join us, book train and flight tickets,” Das said, urging supporters to travel to Delhi.
“Pack your bags. It will be a long fight,” he added.
Representatives of student organisations, including the All India Students’ Association (AISA), All India Students’ Federation (AISF), Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), also joined the press conference and backed the October 10 mobilisation.
AISA president Neha Bora said differences among political groups should not come in the way of a united campaign.
“There are no divisions. We, the people of India, versus the BJP. If we lead this fight unitedly, we will do it effectively,” she said.
SFI's Adarsh Shaji accused the Election Commission of undermining democracy and described the campaign as a battle between “democracy and autocracy”.
Das appealed to young people across the country to converge on the national capital for the October 10 demonstration, giving the mobilisation a clear call: “Chalo Delhi.”UNI PWS AAB
