PM Modi to attend G7 Summit in Alberta, gets invitation call from Canadian PM Mark Carney

New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) Putting all speculation to the contrary to rest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the G7 Leaders' Summit in Canada next week, after having received an invite from Canadian PM Mark Carney.

PM Modi received a call from Canadian PM Mark Carney today, inviting him to attend the June 15-17 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

The invite from the Canadian PM and PM Modi’s attendance marks a thawing in the relations between the two nations that had seen a sharp downward spiral under previous prime minister Justin Trudeau, over the latter’s championing the cause of the Khalistani elements.

PM Modi said in a post on X that the two nations will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests, and that he looks forward to their meeting at the Summit.

“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada.

“Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.

“As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.

“Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

Canadian media had reported that pro-Khalistani organisations had called on Ottawa to "break with a five-year tradition by not inviting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit”.

The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US. The President of the European Commission and several other nations are also expected to participate in the summit.

Late last month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the new Canadian FM Anita Anand had spoken over the phone, and discussed the prospects of bilateral ties.

Indo-Canadian leader Anita Anand was appointed as the Foreign Minister in the government of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose Liberal Party won the parliamentary polls.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also wished PM Carney after he took charge of the government.
