Post-session, J&K leaders trade charges over Assembly protests

Srinagar, Sep 21 (UNI) The opening day of the seven-sitting autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed sharp exchanges between ruling National Conference and opposition BJP leaders, with the two sides trading allegations over governance, public issues and the disruption of House proceedings.
BJP legislators staged protests inside the Assembly over demands concerning the regularisation of daily-wage workers, the status of National Health Mission (NHM) employees, electricity tariffs, reservation policy and other issues concerning the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking outside the Assembly, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma said that people of J&K had high expectations from the government, particularly those who had been waiting for years for their grievances to be addressed.
“Even after two years, the only statement coming from this government and its head is that they do not have the powers and cannot do anything,” Sharma told reporters outside Assembly.
He alleged that the government had failed to ensure adequate basic amenities.
He also accused the government of failing to address pressing public concerns and alleged that the administration was misleading people in the name of outsourcing and employment.
“You have to come up with a recruitment mechanism, you have to fix a criteria, and then you can give jobs in the name of outsourcing,” Sharma said, alleging that 25,000 people had been given jobs against vacancies.
He claimed the government was avoiding questions on employment and other issues by repeatedly invoking the promise of restoration of statehood.
“If the answer to every question is statehood, then dissolve this whole setup and wait for statehood,” Sharma said, urging the government to respond to public concerns in the Assembly.
Responding to the BJP’s allegations, National Conference chief spokesman and MLA Tanvir Sadiq defended the government and accused the opposition of wasting the Assembly’s time through protests.
“Look, I will tell you one thing, that if it is the job of the opposition to oppose, to talk about things, but look at today's disrupted House. 11 BJP members had questions listed on issues including electricity, drinking water and roads, but they disrupted the House instead of allowing the government to respond,” Sadiq said outside the Assembly.
“The government was ready. It is not like that. The Deputy Chief Minister was there. The Chief Minister himself was in the house. All our ministers were sitting. They would have given an answer,” Sadiq said.
He urged opposition members to raise their concerns through questions, resolutions and Zero Hour, rather than protests.
Sadiq also rejected allegations of a political understanding between the BJP and National Conference, saying the ruling party had raised issues concerning its constituencies and was prepared to answer questions from opposition members.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary also criticised the BJP protests, describing them as a “drama” and alleging that the opposition was more interested in media attention than legislative work.
Choudhary said the BJP should have utilised the limited Assembly session to raise questions on issues affecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He referred to questions concerning roads in the Chenab Valley and other areas, saying such matters required accountability and answers from the government.
“The job of the opposition is to reveal those mistakes, to identify them and bring them in front of the government,” Choudhary said, urging BJP members to raise issues through questions and resolutions.
He also defended the government’s handling of the Jal Jeevan Mission report, saying the BJP had deliberately created a commotion on the day the sub-committee report was to be presented.
PDP MLA Waheed Para separately criticised the disruption of proceedings, saying the Assembly had only a limited number of sittings to address public grievances.
Para highlighted protests by daily wagers, NHM employees, MBBS interns and agricultural university interns, along with concerns over unemployment and open merit.
He said the Assembly should focus on resolving issues affecting youth and employees instead of political exchanges.
The autumn session began with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah saying it would provide an opportunity for meaningful debate, constructive deliberations and discussion on issues concerning the welfare and aspirations of the people.

Panchkula, Sep 21(UNI) Haryana Police have arrested six men for allegedly assaulting a hotel worker with sticks following a dispute over payment for food in Gurugram, a police spokesman said here on Monday.
The spokesman said the incident took place at around 9 p.m. on September 16 when the complainant, who works as a helper at a hotel, allegedly got into an argument with a customer who had come to collect food. The customer allegedly called his associates, who attacked the complainant and his companion with sticks, leaving the complainant seriously injured.

27-year-old man dies after honeybee attack in Panchkula forest

Panchkula, Sept 21 (UNI) A 27-year-old man died after being attacked by a swarm of honeybees while he had gone to collect firewood with two friends in a forest area near Pinjore in Haryana's Panchkula district, according to information provided by his family.
The deceased was identified as Raj Kumar, son of Manveer Singh, a resident of the labour colony at Rampur Seuri village. According to the family, Raj Kumar and his two friends had gone to the HMT forest area on September 18 to collect firewood when they were attacked by honeybees.
