Postal Dept releases Special Covers to mark WED

Chennai, June 5 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Postal Department released Special Covers on e-bicycle
ride and the invasive Free Vaduvur Bird Sanctuary to mark the World Environment Day (WED) on Thursday.
In India Post, a Special Cover is a philatelic item that is issued to commemorate a special event,
person, place, institution or significant occasion.
The purpose of the Special Cover is to document and celebrate important milestones, cultural,
historical, scientific, and social events, to promote awareness of a particular cause, personality, heritage site, initiative and to encourage philately among the public, a PIB release said.
This WED, Central Region, Tamilnadu Circle created awareness about clean energy among members of the public by organising an e-bicycle ride in Trichy.
The ride was organised from Rockfort Sub Post Office to Tiruchirappalli Head Post Office.
A unique feature of this e-bicycle ride was that it carried a Special Cover that contained images of
the e-bicycle ride along with a message about swacchtha.
P. Manjula, postwoman from Tiruchirappalli postal division carried the Special Cover covering a distance of approximately 6 km in an e-bicycle.
This is the first time an e-bicycle carried Special Cover is released in Tamilnadu postal circle.
Following this, the Special Carried Cover was released by T. Nirmala Devi, Postmaster General, Central Region, Tamilnadu in the presence of other senior officers, staff and members of public.
It said the Vaduvur Bird Sanctuary, which is composed of small man-made reservoirs interconnected by an ancient network of canals and fed by the Mettur reservoir, in Tiruvarur district of Tamilnadu was identified as an area of national importance and was declared as a Ramsar site in the year 2022.
This reservoir provides habitat for around 118 bird species and the interconnected wetland system acts as a buffer against flooding and also provides water during drought.
The invasive species which tend to out-compete native flora, alter water quality and disrupt the healthy eco-system have been removed from the Sanctuary and this Ramsar Site is now Invasive-Free.
Central Region, TN circle takes pride in showcasing the various environmental friendly and iconic locations in the 12 districts covered by the Region.
Special Covers have already been released on the Ramsar sites of Kodiakkarai, Karaivetti, Pitchavaram, etc.
It said keeping in view the commitment to showcase the efforts taken by the government organizations, both the Central and State Governments as well as the local communities in safeguarding water bodies and encouraging the sustainable flourishing of flora and fauna,
a Special Cover was released on Invasive-Free Vaduvur bird sanctuary.
Central Region, TN circle is marking WED 2025 by releasing the unique philatelic ancillary at Vaduvur.
The Special Cover on Invasive- Free Vaduvur Bird Sanctuary was also released by Ms Nirmala
Devi.
Both the Special Covers will be available for sale at the Philatelic Bureau, Tiruchirappalli Head
Post Office.
