Pranavi's gold proof that Indian women's golf has arrived: Amandeep Johl

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) Golf, for long considered a game of patience rather than drama, found its heroine in Pranavi Urs on Saturday as the Mysuru golfer turned a wobble at the top into a historic Asian Games gold.
Pranavi had the lead. Then she lost it. And when the pressure was at its sharpest, she found a birdie on the 13th hole, reclaimed the sole lead and refused to let the gold slip away.
The triumph was part of a landmark day for Indian women's golf, with Pranavi, Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar also securing the country's first women's team medal at the Asian Games, a silver behind China. Pranavi's individual gold was India's first-ever women's golf gold at the continental showpiece.
The result was India's first-ever women's individual golf gold at the Asian Games -- a performance DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) CEO Amandeep Johl believes could have consequences far beyond one medal.
“Their achievements will inspire the next generation of Indian golfers. We at the DP World PGTI extend our heartiest congratulations to Pranavi and the Indian women's team on this memorable success,” Johl said.
There was little to suggest that Pranavi would be content merely to make up the numbers. She had opened with a 66, followed it with a sparkling 63 and carded another 66 in the third round to reach 15-under 195 and take a three-shot lead into the final day.
Then came the uncomfortable part.
The lead narrowed, the challengers closed in and for a while Pranavi was no longer the woman looking down on the field. But golf rewards those who can forget the previous shot. Pranavi did just that.
The birdie on the 13th put her back on top. From there, the job was simple in theory and difficult in practice -- stay calm, stay on the fairway and finish what she had started.
Johl praised precisely those qualities.
“Pranavi Urs has delivered a remarkable performance at the Asian Games, and her historic gold medal is a proud moment for Indian golf. Her composure, consistency and belief throughout the competition have been truly impressive,” he said.
The victory also gave a satisfying twist to Pranavi's Asian Games story. At Hangzhou in 2023, she finished 13th individually, while the Indian women's team was fourth. This time she returned as a more experienced professional and converted a three-shot advantage into gold.
“Equally, the women’s team silver medal is a testament to the depth and growing strength of women’s golf in India. We are delighted to see Pranavi, Aditi and Diksha perform on such a prestigious stage and put Indian golf firmly in the spotlight,” Johl said.
For Indian golf, the numbers will eventually find their way into record books. The more lasting memory may be of a young golfer who briefly lost the lead, found it again and, when the moment demanded it, kept her nerve.
