President Murmu calls for compassionate healthcare, urges AIIMS Bilaspur to serve hill areas

Shimla, October 6 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday called upon medical professionals to combine clinical excellence with empathy and compassion, saying the primary objective of the medical profession should be to serve humanity.
Addressing the first convocation of AIIMS Bilaspur in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, the President said a person visiting a doctor carries not only fear and uncertainty associated with illness but also hope.
The empathy and compassionate behaviour of doctors gives courage to patients, apart from the knowledge and skills required to treat them, she said.
Murmu urged doctors to remain sensitive and compassionate while striving for excellence in their profession.
She said quality medical care at minimal cost was the hallmark of AIIMS and that, for people across the country, the institution represented access to treatment by some of the nation's most competent doctors.
The President said several AIIMS had been established in different parts of the country to enable a larger number of people to benefit from quality healthcare and provide more meritorious students access to top-tier medical education so that they could serve the nation.
Highlighting the special responsibility of AIIMS Bilaspur, Murmu said its geographical location placed it in a crucial position to provide timely healthcare to people living in remote and difficult areas of Himachal Pradesh.
She said delivering quality healthcare services to populations in the state's hilly and remote areas was a multi-faceted challenge and AIIMS Bilaspur should emerge as a premier centre for advanced tertiary healthcare.
The President stressed the need to strengthen healthcare services in the hill areas by effectively using telemedicine, specialist consultations for remote populations, training of medical personnel and the latest technologies.
She said access to affordable healthcare was particularly important for common people as the cost of treatment for serious illnesses could impose a heavy financial burden on patients and their families.
Referring to the Government of India's Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, Murmu said the scheme provided health insurance cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year to help vulnerable sections of society meet the cost of medical treatment.
The President said providing quality healthcare to citizens at an affordable cost was a collective responsibility.
She stated that the rising cost of medical equipment and medicines posed a serious challenge for patients and their families, and called for greater efforts to develop healthcare solutions that were affordable, accessible and cost-effective.
She said premier institutions such as AIIMS had an important role to play in addressing these challenges through innovation and research.
Murmu expressed confidence that such efforts would help keep citizens healthy and enable them to contribute to the country's progress to their full potential.
