Probe ordered into death of 11-year-old at Kolkata Medical College

Kolkata, Oct 26 (UNI) A four-member inquiry committee has been formed by the authorities of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital to investigate the death of an 11-year-old boy following injections administered during treatment.
The inquiry committee will be headed by paediatrics professor Rakesh Mondal. The other members are Sujoy Maitra, head of paediatric surgery; Imran Ahmed, a cardiologist; and Sanjay Mondal, a medicine specialist.
The panel has been directed to submit its findings within 24 hours.
The development comes after state health minister Sharadwata Mukherjee assured the boy’s family on Monday morning that no one would be spared if allegations of medical negligence were established.
Chemical analysis of the medication administered to the child is also being considered.
Pawan Yadav, a Class IV student from Andul, was admitted to the hospital’s Mother and Child Hub on Sunday morning with abdominal pain.
According to his family, he arrived at around 10 am and was able to walk into the hospital.
However, the family was informed of his death by around 11.30 am.
According to the junior doctors, the choice of medication was not unusual for such symptoms.
However, they claimed that Pawan went into shock shortly after receiving the injection and subsequently died following a cardiac arrest.
An X-ray had been planned once his pain subsided, but the procedure could not be carried out.
The family has alleged that the child was given three injections, whereas hospital authorities reportedly informed them that only two had been administered.
The allegations triggered tension on the hospital premises on Sunday, with a scuffle breaking out between police personnel and family members as authorities attempted to control the situation.
Pawan’s father, Naresh Yadav, also questioned the absence of senior doctors in the paediatric department at the time of the incident.
Junior doctors said a senior resident had gone to the emergency department with a portable ventilator after another patient’s condition deteriorated.
Pawan died during that period, they said.
Pawan’s parents initially refused to consent to a post-mortem examination but later agreed following the health minister’s appeal.
The minister said the examination was necessary to establish whether the injection was appropriate and to determine when and in what dosage it had been administered.
The post-mortem examination is being conducted on Monday.
The findings of the inquiry and the post-mortem report are expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death and determine whether there was any medical negligence.
