Punjab Panel to meet on Oct 6 to discuss Akal Takht suggestions on Anti-Sacrilege Law

Chandigarh, Oct 2 (UNI) A seven-member coordination committee constituted by the Punjab government will meet in Chandigarh on October 6 to examine the provisions of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, and consider suggestions received from Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
The meeting, scheduled for noon, will also discuss modalities for coordination with the separate committee constituted by Sri Akal Takht Sahib to examine the legislation, the state government said.
The government panel comprises former Sri Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, Damdami Taksal head Sant Giani Harnam Singh Khalsa, Sant Baba Sewa Singh Rampur Kheda, retired Justices Jaspal Singh and Gurbir Singh, former IPS officer Jatinder Singh Aulakh and Law Officer Preet Inder Paul Singh.
“The Coordination Committee will undertake detailed discussions on various aspects of the legislation and consider the suggestions received from Sri Akal Takht Sahib,” the Punjab government said, noting that the exercise would seek to respect the spirit and sanctity underlying the legislation while considering different viewpoints.
The consultations follow a meeting Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann held with the seven-member panel, during which he stressed that efforts to build consensus should not dilute what the government considers the core purpose of the law.
“The spirit of the law must not be compromised,” Mann said, adding that provisions including life imprisonment and heavy fines for acts of sacrilege formed the core of the legislation.
The amendment law received the Punjab Governor's assent on April 17 and was notified on April 20. It expands the 2008 law, including by defining sacrilege and providing penal provisions for specified offences.
The government said the October 6 deliberations were intended to facilitate dialogue with religious representatives and other stakeholders before deciding the way forward.
