Rare surgery performed to remove fishbone from heart artery

Kakinada, June 5 (UNI) A very rare and yet complex surgery was performed on a woman patient by Apollo hospital doctors here for removal of a fish bone that had pierced through the esophagus and lodged in a major artery near the heart.
A team of doctors of Apollo hospital consisting of Dr V Sivaramakrishna, Dr P Nageswerarao and Dr G Vamsi Chaithanya told media persons at the hospital here on Thursday that such cases were very rare with two or three reported nationwide.
They explained that the patient, 54- year- old Jampa Mangayamma from Biccavolu, had swallowed the fish bone while eating fish curry. The fish bone has eventually passed through the esophagus and lodged in a critical area near the heart.
Initial examinations revealed the dangerous positioning of the bone.
The medical team after careful study decided not to resort to open heart surgery or cause damage to the chest bones but apply advanced medical techniques to extract the bone and save the precious life of the woman.
Using the Trevor procedure, the fish bone was removed via a catheter inserted through the thigh, the team added.
They confirmed that the patient was now fast recovering and expected to be discharged soon.
Patient’s son explained that his mother, while eating the fish curry ten days ago, had responded to a cell phone call and did not notice that she swallowed the fish bone.
Initially mistaking the symptoms as gastric problems, they consulted local doctors who prescribed medication.
When the condition did not improve, she was brought to Apollo hospital here and after medical tests the doctors had diagnosed the problem.
Hospital COO Dr R.R. Reddy, Deputy CEO Murthy and other staff have commended the medical team for their expertise in performing the challenging surgery.
