Chennai, June 6 (UNI) Retired Justice M.S. Janarthanam Committee, who headed a one-man Commission and recommended 3 per cent reservation for Aruthathiyar community and ensured
social justice, died here on Friday.
He chaired the one man panel formed by the then Tamil Nadu government headed by former Chief Minister and DMK Patriarch M Karunanidhi to go into the social justice and educational backwardness of the Arunthathiyar community, a Scheduled Caste within the larger Scheduled Caste category.
His report, submitted in November 2008, recommended reservation for Arunthathiyars within the Scheduled Caste quota, leading to the enactment of the Tamil Nadu Arunthathiyar Special Reservation Act in 2009.
He was also instrumental in ensuring quota for backward classes during his tenure as the Chairman of the TN Backward Classes commission.
Chief Minister M K Stalin and leaders of various political parties condoled his death and termed it
as a big loss to the judiciary and to all those involved in the social justice movement.
