Section of under-construction six-lane NH 66 collapses in Malappuram

Malappuram, May 19 (UNI) A section of the under-construction six-lane National Highway (NH- 66) collapsed on Monday and the left side of the elevated highway caved on to the service road at Kooriyad near Tirurangadi. No casualties were reported.
The traffic was diverted along the Kozhikode-Thrissur NH road, following the incident, through VK Padi- Mambram - Kakkad routes, sources said.
Large cracks were seen on the service road, which was built by filling it with mud from a nearby paddy field.
The six -lane NH 66 was built at Kooriyad in between the paddy fields.
The incident took place around 1430 hrs.
Two cars were travelling on the service road (just under the elevated highway) during the accident time and mud and stones fell on the top of the car.
Local residents rushed to the spot and lifted out the two cars.
However, no casualty was reported and the passengers miraculously escaped without injuries.
An earth mover (JCB) used for the construction works of NH also fell into a pit.
Local people representatives alleged that the elevation work was carried out unscientifically and they had already alerted the NH authorities, but no action was taken by the authorities so far, which resulted in the collapse today.
