Siddaramaiah will lead for full 5-year term: Rayareddy

Bengaluru, July 1 (UNI) As murmurs of a leadership change gain traction within the Karnataka Congress, senior party leader and MLA Basavaraj Rayareddy today issued a categorical statement backing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, asserting, “Let me make it very clear — we have chosen Siddaramaiah to lead the government for five years.”
Rayareddy’s strong words come amid reported claims by Ramanagara MLA Iqbal Hussain that around 100 MLAs favour a change in leadership, supporting Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC President DK Shivakumar for the top post.
Dismissing such talk as speculative and misleading, Rayareddy stressed, “There is no atmosphere of confusion or conflict in our party. That is the clear answer to your question.”
Addressing Hussain’s remarks indirectly, he said, “If any MLA is saying that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will be replaced, then it is absolutely wrong.”
He pointed out that such a decision, if ever required, lies entirely with the Congress high command and ultimately with the elected MLAs of the party.
“Suddenly saying the CM will be changed is incorrect — no matter who says it,” he added.
Rayareddy noted that while various names often do rounds in the media, they should not be taken as indicators of internal discord.
“Some supporters may say Shivakumar should be CM. Others may say Dr G Parameshwara, Darshanapur, or even I should be CM. There is nothing wrong in having ambition. Every citizen has the right to aspire,” he said.
He was, however, quick to draw a distinction between ambition and destabilisation.
“Statements made in the media with no basis are either for entertainment or aimed at slightly disturbing the government,” he said.
Reiterating the democratic process followed post the 2023 assembly elections, Rayareddy stated, “The people gave us a clear majority. Based on that, the Governor invited the Congress party to form the government. The legislature party met and chose Siddaramaiah as its leader with majority support.”
He further clarified that if any future change were to happen, it would have to be initiated by the party high command through proper internal consultation — not media speculation.
“No one can remove the CM without first consulting the legislature party,” he asserted.
By underlining Siddaramaiah’s mandate and the party’s internal decision-making process, Rayareddy’s remarks appear intended to project unity and stability, even as the Congress high command faces growing pressure to address factional aspirations within its Karnataka unit.
