SIR bid to create unrest as Cong unnerved by Modi’s popularity: Vijayendra

Bagalkot, Oct 8 (UNI) Karnataka BJP president Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Thursday alleged that the Congress, unable to accept Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and the country’s development trajectory, was using the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as a pretext to create unrest and disturb peace in the country.
Addressing reporters here, Vijayendra said the previous day was “historic” as the country witnessed what he described as Modi’s “blemish-free” political service and governance.
He said the Prime Minister’s vision of building a self-reliant India and transforming the country into a developed nation was taking shape, but the Congress was unable to accept it.
“Rahul Gandhi and Congress leaders are frustrated by the popularity of Narendra Modi. SIR is being used as a pretext to create confusion and disturb peace in the country,” he alleged.
Vijayendra accused Congress leaders of making baseless allegations against constitutional institutions over SIR and attempting to undermine public confidence in them.
“The target of Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he alleged.
Turning his attack towards the Karnataka government, Vijayendra questioned what Shivakumar had “achieved” during his first 100 days as Chief Minister.
He alleged that the government had failed to show adequate concern towards farmers despite the state facing drought-like conditions.
“The government says it will give Rs 2,500 compensation to farmers. Giving Rs 2,500 to farmers is like giving alms to the poor,” he said.
Vijayendra also accused the Chief Minister of being more concerned about real estate than people's problems.
“DK Shivakumar has more concern for real estate than for the people. He is an expert in real estate and clever at extracting money from waste,” he alleged.
He claimed that several government schemes had remained confined to announcements and publicity and said there was a growing perception among people that the Chief Minister was focused largely on Bengaluru.
Referring to the state’s financial condition, Vijayendra said a letter written to the government regarding its finances was indicative of the alleged mismanagement of the state’s economy.
He also targeted the government’s proposal to construct ring roads in various taluks, alleging that it was being driven by real estate interests.
“Instead of giving priority to irrigation and development projects such as the Upper Krishna Project, the government is talking about ring roads in every taluk. There is a real estate interest behind the proposal to borrow money from the World Bank for these projects,” he alleged.
Vijayendra alleged that the government had no intention of filling vacant government posts and had also failed to clarify its position on the caste reservation issue concerning decisions taken during the previous Basavaraj Bommai government.
He accused the Congress government of neglecting North Karnataka and alleged that law and order had deteriorated in the state.
Referring to incidents involving atrocities against Dalits and crimes against women, he targeted the Chief Minister’s government over its handling of law and order.
He further accused the Congress of attempting to return to power by “sowing the poison of caste” in society.
“People of Karnataka are fed up with the Congress government,” he claimed.
On the forthcoming Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections, Vijayendra said the BJP was strengthening its organisation through the ‘Booth Sankalpa Yatra’.
He said the party was working to strengthen its booth-level network, listen to people's problems and prepare its workers for the elections.
Reacting to Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s warning to ministers to remain cautious about sting operations, Vijayendra referred to the Ramesh Jarkiholi episode.
“Who conducted the sting operation in the Ramesh Jarkiholi case is known to the people of Karnataka. Do they conduct sting operations against their own MLAs? People also know who carried out the ‘Ding Operation’,” he said.
On the SIR protests led by Rahul Gandhi, Vijayendra alleged that the Congress leader was bringing together various political parties and organisations because he had realised that the Congress could not come to power on its own.
“The fact that everyone is being brought together for the protest shows that they know they cannot achieve their objective alone,” he said.
On the financial crisis facing the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Vijayendra claimed that the corporation’s Managing Director had written to the Finance Department stating that around Rs 6,500 crore was pending from the government.
He alleged that the financial situation had reached a stage where the government was finding it difficult to pay salaries to transport corporation employees, including cleaners.
Responding to Shivakumar’s assertion that the Congress would form the government again in 2028 and that he would become Chief Minister, Vijayendra said he had no objection to the Chief Minister returning to the post.
“DK Shivakumar becoming Chief Minister again is not my concern. But he should keep aside sting operations and ‘Ding Operations’ and concentrate on providing proper governance,” he said.
Vijayendra also pointed to recent statements and letters by senior Congress leaders, including HK Patil, Basavaraj Rayareddy and BR Patil, and claimed they reflected differences within the ruling party.
“When senior leaders themselves are expressing their dissatisfaction, D.K. Shivakumar cannot even pursue his real estate activities peacefully,” he remarked.
On the Enforcement Directorate case involving Minister Satish Jarkiholi, Vijayendra said some leaders were prepared to go to any extent to protect their positions.
“Who is doing what will become clear to the people of Karnataka in the coming days,” he said.
Vijayendra said the BJP was preparing to strengthen its organisation at the grassroots level and would use the ‘Booth Sankalpa Yatra’ to mobilise workers and take up people's issues ahead of the local body elections.
