Sri Lanka thrash Bangladesh by innings and 78 runs

Colombo, June 28 (UNI) Sri Lanka wrapped up a dominant victory over Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs on the fourth morning of the second Test at the SSC Ground in Colombo today, completing the match in just 28 minutes and sealing the two-match series 1-0.

Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was the star of the show, claiming figures of 5 for 56 in the second innings—his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

With Bangladesh resuming on 117 for 6, still trailing by 94 runs, Jayasuriya wasted little time in running through the tail. Wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, returning to the field after missing day three due to a sore shoulder, played a supporting role behind the stumps.

Sri Lanka's win was built on a commanding first-innings total of 458, powered by Pathum Nissanka’s career-best 158, and solid contributions from Dinesh Chandimal (93) and Kusal Mendis (84). In response, Bangladesh managed 247 in their first innings, with Shadman Islam top-scoring with 46. The hosts enforced the follow-on and swiftly bowled Bangladesh out again for just 133.

Among the bowlers, Dinusha Fernando (3/22) and Asitha Fernando (3/51) shared the first-innings spoils, while Jayasuriya’s left-arm spin proved too much for Bangladesh in their second outing.

This win marked Sri Lanka’s ninth innings victory over Bangladesh in Test history and earned them valuable World Test Championship points.

Brief Scores:

Sri Lanka 458 (Nissanka 158, Chandimal 93, Mendis 84; Taijul 5-131)

Bangladesh 247 (Shadman 46; Dinusha 3-22, Asitha 3-51) & 133 (Mushfiqur 26; Jayasuriya 5-56)

Result: Sri Lanka won by an innings and 78 runs

Series: Sri Lanka won 2-match series 1-0
